The Men’s Kitchen arrives in the Hills District — And the pans are already sizzling!

The Hills District has officially joined the ever-growing Men’s Kitchen family — and what a fantastic start it’s been! Our very first cooking sessions have kicked off, and the energy in the room is nothing short of brilliant.

For many of the men, stepping into the kitchen is a brand-new adventure. Most have never chopped an onion, sautéed a veg, or stirred a sauce before — but you wouldn’t know it from the enthusiasm they bring to every session. They come from all walks of life, with different stories, skills and backgrounds, yet the moment the aprons go on, something special happens. The conversations start flowing, the laughter builds, and the sense of camaraderie fills the room just as quickly as the aromas from the stove.

And guiding them through this new culinary journey is our inaugural team of six brand-new Hills District instructors — a wonderful mix of passionate, patient and talented volunteers who have settled into their roles beautifully. From walking the men through their very first knife skills to supporting them as they tackle their recipe of the day, the instructors have already become the backbone of this new kitchen. Their contribution is immense, and our members lean on them for much more than cooking know-how — they bring encouragement, confidence and plenty of good humour.

Already we’re seeing something we’ve witnessed in every Men’s Kitchen across the country: the simple joy that comes when older blokes come together, learn something new, have a laugh, and share a meal they made themselves. The pride on faces, the gentle stirring of new friendships, the “I never thought I could do this!” moments — this is exactly why the Men’s Kitchen exists.

The Hills District group is off to a flying start, and we couldn’t be more delighted. To all the new members, welcome. To our dedicated instructors, thank you — we simply couldn’t do this without you. And to the wider community: watch this space. This is just the beginning, and there’s plenty more good food, good company and good times to come!

All set to start cooking!

With our team of fantastic new instructors on board and the kitchen fully equipped thanks to Bankstown Sports Club, we are all set to welcome 20 members to join our cooking sessions over the next few weeks.

If you would like to have fun learning a new skill please call Alison on 0493 333 352

We are looking for cooking instructors to assist

"As my wife no longer cooks it has fallen to me to prepare our meals I was prompted to join the Men’s Kitchen. My experience with the Men’s Kitchen has allowed me to expand my cooking skills and attempt a range of healthy foods in our diet. I can now follow a recipe with confidence to cook food I wouldn’t have attempted before.”

This is the experience of one of our members and a similar experience will soon be available to older men in the Hills District.

TO MAKE IT HAPPEN WE NEED YOU!

To guide our members in their cooking journey we need several competent cooks, ex chefs or cookery teachers!

Help us set up a new Men's Kitchen in Castle Hill by volunteering one Thursday a month from 10.45am -2pm!

Have fun helping older blokes learn to cook from our international recipe book plus share a delicious meal and make new friends.

The Hills District Men's Kitchen

Great news!

We have secured our venue to launch the Hills District Men's Kitchen.

It's located at the Wesley Uniting Church Hall on Showground Road, and is very central to the area, just around the corner from the Castle Hill shopping mall.  Check these photos out!  A great venue by all measures.

Our Program

Hills District Kitchen

At each of our cooking sessions we conduct our program in the same manner:

  • We meet at 11am and have a chat about the menu of the day discussing any significant points about each new recipe.
  • Then we form into pairs, with each pair tasked to prepare a complete dish. They then choose which dish they would like to tackle. (Generally, a choice of a main, a dessert or any side dish of the day like flat bread or salad.)
  • Prepare the meal with the cooking instructor helping us to learn by pointing out tips and techniques as we construct our dish.
  • When the meal is ready, we sit together and enjoy the feast we have just made and have a general chat.
  • Plan the menu for the next time we meet. At this point, we seek volunteers to buy the ingredients for each menu item, and a volunteer to wash the aprons and tea towels.
  • Finally, we clear up, wash the dishes and depart by about 2pm.

If you would like to join one of our cooking sessions please click on the link below and register your interest.
